“Are harnesses safe?” is really three different questions wearing one coat, and they have three different answers. Taken separately they are much easier to deal with — and two of the three turn out not to be about harnesses at all.
Objection one: harnesses restrict the shoulder
This one has a real basis, and it is a shape argument rather than a category argument. A classic step-in harness folds up from flat, which means the chest webbing ends up as a roughly horizontal band across the front of the dog — directly over both shoulder joints. Those joints rotate on every stride. A strap sitting across them is not an emergency, but it is not ideal either, and over long distances or at speed it is the kind of thing that shows up as a shortened stride or a rub mark.
A Y-shaped overhead harness solves it. The chest webbing runs down the breastbone and splits into two straps that pass up either side of the neck, above the shoulders, leaving the joint inside the open arms of the Y. That is why practically every harness built for hiking, running or working dogs uses this shape. So: the honest answer to objection one is “some harness shapes, yes — buy a Y”.
Objection two: harnesses teach dogs to pull
Also partly true, and also a design question rather than a verdict. A back-clip harness gives a dog a broad, comfortable, well-distributed load to lean into. That is not an accident of cheap design; it is the operating principle of every sled harness ever made. If your only attachment point is behind the shoulders, you have built a very small sled rig.
The AKC’s guidance on leash pulling makes the countervailing point: a front leash attachment redirects a pulling dog back toward you, rather than giving it something solid to brace against. So the practical answer is to buy a dual-clip harness and actually use the front ring on walks where pulling is likely. And to be clear about what hardware does: a front ring makes the walk manageable while you do loose-leash training. It is leverage, not a method.
Objection three: dogs escape from harnesses
True of a badly fitted two-strap harness, and false of a well-fitted three-strap one. Almost every harness is built as two straps — one round the chest, one behind the front legs — with an open span along the ribs between them. The escape is not a struggle: the dog plants, drops its head and shoulders and walks backwards, and the harness travels forward through that span and off.
Adding a third strap closes the gap, which is the entire design brief of an escape-proof harness. And it is worth putting the comparison the right way round: on a breed whose neck is wider than its skull, a flat collar is the thing that comes off easily. A correctly fitted three-strap harness is the more secure option, not the less.
The objection nobody raises, which is the real one
None of the above is what actually causes problems day to day. The genuine issue is harnesses left on all the time. Straps parked in one position flatten and tangle the coat. Padding that got wet on a walk holds damp against the skin for hours, which is where most of the “this harness rubbed my dog” complaints come from — it is a moisture problem being blamed on fabric quality. And an unsupervised dog wearing a harness can hook it on furniture, a crate bar or a fence.
On for the walk, off afterwards. That one habit removes more harness-related problems than any amount of money spent on the harness itself.
