Measure the chest at its widest, not behind the elbow
The standard instruction is to measure girth just behind the front legs. On a Labrador that spot is often not the widest point — the barrel continues to widen for another inch or two back. Measure both, and size to the larger figure. A harness that has to be forced over the widest part of the ribcage to get on will sit wrong for its entire life.
The neck opening deserves the same attention. Labradors have a thick neck relative to their head, which is why an overhead harness that fits the chest can still be a fight to get on. Step-in designs sidestep that problem entirely, and our step-in vs overhead comparison covers the trade-off.
The coat compression problem
Fit the harness when the coat is in its normal state, then re-check it after a swim. If the two-finger check passes dry and you can get a whole hand under a strap wet, the harness is relying on coat volume it will not always have. Tighten to the wet figure, not the dry one — a slightly snug harness on a dry coat is comfortable; a loose one on a wet dog is an escape.
This is also the argument against the cheapest two-adjuster harnesses for this breed specifically. They let you set the girth and nothing else, so there is no way to compensate for a neck that is now proportionally looser.
Pulling: manage it and train it
A front-clip ring redirects a pulling dog back toward you instead of letting it lean into the harness. On a 70 lb Labrador that difference is the whole walk. But redirection is management, not training: the AKC’s own guidance on leash pulling is consistent that equipment buys you control while you teach the behavior, and does not teach it for you.

Adolescent Labs are a different dog
Between roughly eight and eighteen months a Labrador changes shape faster than any harness stays fitted. Buy the cheaper harness in that window and re-check the fit monthly — buying the expensive one at ten months and discovering it is tight at fourteen is a common and avoidable waste.
The same applies in reverse for the second harness. Once the dog has stopped growing, that is the point to spend properly on something built for daily use over years, which is the case for the Ruffwear Front Range.
Swimming, and what it does to hardware
Labradors swim. Fresh water is survivable for hardware; salt water is not, and neither is being left wet in a hall cupboard. Rinse the harness after a beach trip and hang it to dry, or the buckles will seize and the webbing will stiffen and start abrading the coat.
If the dog swims constantly, a coated webbing collar and a harness you can hose down are worth more than padding you cannot dry. Padded neoprene panels are lovely on a dry dog and slow to dry on a wet one.
