What 'crash-tested' actually means for dog car harnesses

“Crash-tested” is the most reassuring phrase in the dog-car-safety aisle, and also the most abused. Put it on a box and a worried owner relaxes and buys. But unlike the child car seat next to it on the shelf, a dog harness isn’t held to any government crash standard — so those two words can mean a rigorous independent test, a quick in-house tug on a strap, or, honestly, nothing you can verify at all. This guide explains what real crash testing looks like, who actually does it, and how to read a “crash-tested” claim without getting fooled.
There is no legal crash standard for dog harnesses
Start with the fact that reframes everything: in the United States, there is no federal safety standard, and no mandatory crash test, for dog car harnesses. Child car seats must pass a defined government test before they can be sold. Dog harnesses face no such bar. That means a manufacturer is free to design, market, and sell a harness with the words “crash-tested” on it without any independent body ever checking the claim. It isn’t necessarily dishonest — some makers really do test — but the phrase carries no guarantee by itself. The burden is on you to ask who did the testing, and how.
What real crash testing looks like: the Center for Pet Safety
The one organization filling that gap is the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), an independent, nonprofit research group that tests pet travel products and publishes the results. Crucially, CPS isn’t owned by a harness brand, so it has no incentive to hand out passing grades. Its harness testing runs in two stages.
First is a static strength test: the harness is loaded to confirm the materials and hardware can withstand the forces involved without tearing or failing. A harness that can’t survive that never reaches the next stage.
Second is a dynamic crash test. Using a specially built canine test dummy on a crash sled, CPS simulates a frontal collision at roughly 30 mph — broadly comparable to the conditions used for child-restraint testing. The test looks at whether the harness keeps the dummy in place, whether it stays intact, and whether it would stop the dog from becoming a projectile or launching into a seatback. Harnesses that keep the dog controlled and contained earn certification; the many that don’t, don’t.
The two things to hold onto are the mechanism — a static strength test, then a 30 mph simulated crash with an instrumented dummy — and the outcome: only a small handful of harnesses have ever earned CPS certification. So if real testing is this demanding, why is “crash-tested” on so many boxes? Because the phrase is quietly doing three very different jobs, and the packaging rarely tells you which:

What the AVMA actually recommends
Step back from the harness for a moment, because the single biggest safety decision isn’t which harness — it’s whether you restrain the dog at all, and where. The American Veterinary Medical Association is clear: pets should be restrained in a moving vehicle, and the safest spot is the back seat, secured in a crate, carrier, or harness rather than riding loose. An unrestrained dog can be thrown in a crash, can seriously injure the humans in the car, and can bolt from a wrecked vehicle into traffic. A dog in the front seat faces an added danger — a passenger airbag is engineered for an adult human and can badly hurt a dog when it deploys. The FDA gives complementary advice for travel: get your pet comfortable with its restraint ahead of time, so the crate, carrier, or harness isn’t a fight on the day. In other words, the certification arms race matters less than the basics — back seat, restrained, every trip.
How to read a “crash-tested” claim skeptically
You don’t need to be an engineer to see through a weak claim. Run each one past a few questions:
- Who did the testing?A named independent body (CPS) is worth far more than “crash-tested in our lab.” If no tester is named, assume none.
- Is there a published result you can check? Real certification comes with a result you can look up, not just a badge on the box.
- To what limit?Maker tests are often tied to a specific weight. A harness “tested to 75 lb” tells you nothing reassuring about a 90 lb dog.
- Is it a harness at all, or a tether?This is the one that catches people out — see below.
- Does it connect properly to the car? A crash claim is meaningless if the harness attaches to the seatbelt or LATCH with a long, stretchy strap. Short and low-stretch is what holds a dog close in an impact.
The honest tether caveat
The most common way owners buy a false sense of safety is by picking up a “dog seat belt” that is really just a tether. A tether is a short strap that clips a dog’s existing harness to the seatbelt buckle or a LATCH anchor. Its job is to stop the dog roaming the cabin — and that’s genuinely useful, because a loose dog is a distraction and the AVMA wants dogs restrained. But a tether, by itself, is not crash protection. It doesn’t spread crash forces across the dog’s body, and it can’t hold a dog safely in a real impact the way an engineered crash harness does. A retractable tether is worse still for this purpose: the very stretch that makes it convenient is the opposite of what you want in a collision, where you need the dog held close, not paying out slack. Buy a tether to add roaming control to a harness you already trust — never as your dog’s only line of defense. And never clip any tether to a flat collar, which can injure a dog’s neck if it’s thrown against it; the connection always goes to a well-fitted harness.
